Abstract

Arizona State University is the largest teacher preparation program in the United States and we are aware communities are grappling with a teacher shortage. 40% to 50% of teachers are leaving the profession within the first five years (Ingersoll, 2012), simultaneously, teacher preparation programs are facing declining enrollments. Many states including Arizona have passed “solution” legislation requiring a only a Bachelor’s degree and a fingerprint clearance to become a teacher. The long-term impacts of this type of solution is unclear.
