Abstract

The focus of this paper is to trace the educational development vis-à-vis the various commissions and committees formed during the period under study. Why education was regarded an issue of such importance? What debates and discussions took place at the time of introduction of the reforms? The reforms at Calcutta University attracted attention from the various strata. Why was it so? Were the recommendations of these commissions and committees taken into consideration? Was there certain contestation within the Indian leaders and within the British officials? These are some of the questions which the chapter attempt to study.
