Abstract

In this presentation, we share findings of a COIL collaboration developed with arts integration and creativity expansion in mind. COIL, Collaborative Online International Learning, refers to a pedagogical practice through which students from different countries, guided by faculty, work together on a project that is part of the curriculum. Through this virtual exchange, students gain in intercultural and global competencies while also enhancing other capacities such as perceptive attitude, decision making, collaboration, social empathy, flexibility, and openness to risk taking. Our interdisciplinary collaborative project integrates the literary arts with audio arts, thus creating the opportunity for students to discover the importance of auditory perception and its affective dimension, that is, of the less explored realm of audionarratology. In this 5-week COIL project, students from the University Tecnológico de Monterrey, in México, worked with Heritage Spanish students from California State University, Stanislaus, in the USA. The activity encompasses all the steps of a global collaborative online design.
