Abstract

Due to diverse classification of technology a single security mechanism cannot be a panacea for DoS attacks in all computer-based scenarios. Vulnerability of one scenario may be asset of the other scenario. For example, battery is the main concern in wireless or resource constraint networks but not an extreme significance in wired networks. Similarly, lightweight solutions are favorable in infrastructure less networks, but infrastructure-based networks can manage both lightweight and heavy weight solutions. In this paper we will survey the DoS attacks in different dimensions such as networking protocols (application, transport and network layers), system platforms (such as windows/Linux/android/blackberry, apples, Symbian, Palm, iPhone etc) and network type (such as MANET, VANET, SENSOR, cloud, pervasive/ubiquitous and low energy). We also present the pros and cons of each countermeasure mechanism implemented/proposed in a detail tabulated form. We also highlighted the vulnerabilities exploited and still remaining open issues with technological challenges.
