Abstract

The potentially adverse implications of the oil and gas related operations has necessitated the need for adoption of an environmental management practices expressly in countries of the global south where environmental regulatory framework enforcement seems marginal. The purpose of this report is to address critically the effect of non- adherence to the health safety and environmental management systems in the global south. Accordingly, a survey was carried out using questionnaires along with in-depth interviews relevant stakeholders of the industry. The findings asserted that albeit, there has been great HSE negligence on the part of most multinational hydrocarbon firms in the areas, which has led to severe environment damages owing to the failing legislative system. Some multinational companies on the other hand, have held up to a reasonably good HSEM standard by adopting the EMS practices into their operational and organizational constructs through the acquisition of the ISO 14001 which no doubt have had positive impact in sustainability of the environment in the region and at large.
