Abstract

Sensitive to student needs in today's globalized world, this study reports the creation and trial, at a Taiwan university, of a new set of extensional cultural awareness-focused materials for an English reading course. The work was firstly undertaken under the aegis of the MOE SPROUT (‘Sustained Progress and Rise of Universities in Taiwan’) project, followed by the sponsor of the university to manufacture extensional digital materials focused on introducing Ukraine culture. A total of 15 films including 8 talk shows with topics on names and title addressing courtesy, school system, holidays, food and alcohol drinks were made and designed based on the Flipped Classroom framework. However, a pioneer Interactive Art Gallery project was also integrated into the curriculum to expand our students’ language and culture literacy via the creation of artworks. The art pieces intend to enhance the creative thinking of the students, as well as support their emotional wellbeing. The art project will inspire them for better work and studies. It is well known how valuable and important art visualizations in the study and working venues are for emotional health and creative potential. The purpose is to enhance the creative and emotionally positive cross culture atmosphere and make an inspiring environment for the students. Both qualitative and quantitative data were triangulated to investigate the effectiveness of Flipped classroom pioneer work. A pre and post survey was carried out to gauge students’ feeling and perspective on the Interactive Art Gallery, together with a five Likert scale questionnaire on the flipped classroom course design. Completion of the online homework followed by the test taking rate were collected, as well as the film review frequency plus the pre and post proficiency tests result. The goal is to locate variants pertaining to the effective cross culture Flipped Classroom design for
future instructional and pedagogical implementation.
