Abstract

In the Fall of 2016, the Digital Media department at East Tennessee State University redesigned the entire departmental curriculum. The following paper explores several core changes regarding the animation concentration and how those changes were leveraged to create a program with improved flexibility and depth of focus. The curriculum’s four key elements are the freshman level “principles” classes, the sophomore-level midpoint review, the repeatable 3000/4000 level classes, and the senior portfolio review. The following paper details how those four elements were leveraged to create a four-year animation concentration pathway that empowers students to produce a specialized and competitive animation portfolio by the time they graduate.
