In this talk, I will share active learning hacks that work. I will demonstrate the techniques in a way that encourages audience participation. Active learning topics covered will include stimulating discussion, creative ways to call on students, moving beyond think-pair-share, and storytelling as engagement. A key feature of the talk will be how teachers can help students make connections between active learning techniques and course content. Learning can be fun, but unless the teacher reinforces the content, then active learning just becomes fun and games. I will also talk about accountability and assessment solutions that work in small as well as large lecture classes. In other words, how do we grade discussion?
