Abstract

The field of education has always relied on Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory as a model of learning despite its original formulation as a model of human development. Recent changes in the field of education brought about by the pandemic, as well as failures in advancing learning practices across p-12 systems, have called into question the utility of this model as it fails to address the full meaning of the “self” in the learning process. The authors propose a revised systems model that integrates a bio-psycho-social lens in creating a neuroscience-informed 21st century model of learning for educational enterprises.
