Abstract

The course Fundamentals of Business Technology & Innovation is an introductory class for those seeking a tech career, mainly motivated by the current wave of digital transformation in almost every business sector and industry. Teaching these topics could be challenging because of the complexity of computer science fundamentals; therefore, we introduced a much more practical approach that aligns well with the younger generation’s learning preferences. Problem-based learning is currently used as the primary mechanism to engage students and familiarize them with daily situations at companies. These include but are not limited to structuring business problems that require a tech-based solution, the design of mobile apps and websites that satisfy the customer’s demands in a friendly and intuitive way, and the documentation and reporting of such solutions. The response to this approach has been highly positive, with a well noticed increase in student satisfaction and knowledge retention.
