Abstract

The study investigated the effect of mathematics laboratory on the academic achievement of students in tertiary institution of Statistics Department. The study involves two groups of students namely, the experimental group and the control group. The first group were taught using mathematical laboratory while the second group were taught in ordinary lecture hall. One research question and one null hypothesis guided the study. The sample of the study comprises eighty-six subjects from two selected tertiary institution in Osun State. Both groups took pre-test and the data were collected from the subject using Tertiary Mathematics Achievement Test (TMAT). The research question was answered using the mean and standard deviation, while the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was the statistical tools used to test for significance of the difference at 0.05 level. The result of findings showed that the students taught mathematical concepts using mathematics laboratory performed better and so encouraging compared to those taught in an ordinary lecture hall. Recommendations were made and among others is that, standard mathematics laboratory should be provided in tertiary institutions.
