Abstract

Corporal punishment violates human rights to physical integrity and human dignity. This includes the use of the cane, which a common disciplinary measure used by teachers in most schools, particularly the preschool, elementary and high schools. Using the cane on children, particularly at the preschool could be detrimental to their development since childhood is a period of rapid personality development and any error at this stage could mar the child for life. This study therefore examined some of the effects of the use of the cane on children. It also highlighted better alternative methods that could be used more effectively with children without the danger of physical or psychological damage to their personality. Recommendations include the use of these alternative methods of discipline highlighted in the study as well as the need for public awareness about the negative effects of the use of the cane on children.
