Studies have shown that university students experience problems with understanding the concept of academic writing, and that they usually need a lot of instruction and support from the teacher in order to gain skills in writing. Regardless of this fact – the Language Center at the University of Helsinki offers courses in academic writing, were the learning approach is student-centered, more specifically the focus is on autonomous learning. The focus at these courses is on the student’s ability to take responsibility for their own learning and on the notion that the students construct their own understanding based on prior knowledge.
