Abstract

This presentation addresses a place that plays a central role in the development of the individual and in shaping the broader societal contexts: the social space of the school. This includes its teachers and other instructional personnel who can become important actors in the education, formation, and socialisation of their students. What images of schools and schooling do these teachers bring with them to their work in a society in the middle of Europe like Austria facing a large flux of migrant students? Teachers with their own experiences being migrant and who often have to assert themselves in the face of the socalled majority society are given their say.
