Abstract

There have been numerous studies pointing out the beneficial, pedagogic aspects of the corpora for English language teaching. Notwithstanding the acknowledgement of corpora in research papers, the integration of corpora into English language teaching has remained unimportant in Hong Kong. In light of this gap, this paper is to illustrate the means of using corpus linguistics in English grammar teaching at tertiary level. By and large, corpus linguistics is a source of providing natural language use for study through the concordance. In this article the main features of the Longman Spoken and Written English (LSWE) corpus are presented. The illustration is confined to the grammatical items at tertiary level. Also, some pedagogical activities based on the corpus techniques would be elaborated. Yet teachers’ limited knowledge on corpus linguistics has hindered them from using it in class (Conrad 1999). Indeed teachers-in-training and qualified teachers should know the value of corpus-based studies and make good use of it in the English grammar teaching [13].
