Pre-service Teacher Candidates’ Perceptions of Teacher Burnout
Abstract
The research paper provides a comprehensive review of the interrelationships between psychological health, psychological well-being and educational motivation of the students of psychology of Armenian State Pedagogical University after Khachatur Abovyan between 2020-2023. Those were rather drastic years for Armenia (COVID-19 and 44 days war with more than five thousand victims and thousands of refugees). After returning to offline classes most of the professors claimed on the decrease of students’ academic results and motivation. In this sense the main objective of the current study has been to examine the factors influencing educational motivation and analyze the complex dynamics between the psychological health, psychological well -being and educational motivation. Psychological health refers to the state of the individual’s mental, emotional and social well- being and psychological well-being refers to the individual’s positive state characterized by life satisfaction, purpose, personal growth and positive functioning. The experimental study has been carried out in several stages and different diagnostic methods, as C.D. Ryff’s 84 item Scale of Psychological Well-being/SPWB), R.G. Vallerand’s Academic Motivation Scale (AMS-C28), Method of diagnosis of educational motivation of students designed by A. Rean and V. Yakunin as well as our own Questionnaire on the psychological health of the students were used. In total one hundred and ten students of psychology took part in the experiment. The analysis of the results demonstrated that most of the students show average and low levels of psychological wellbeing on Ryff’s scale. Only a few number of the students demonstrated high level of psychological well- being. To our opinion it can be explained by the influence of COVID lockdown and 44 days war on one hand, and the social instability of the region on another. As to students’ educational motivation, according to Vallerand’s Scale, and Rean’s and Yakunin’s diagnostic method, only a little percent of the students demonstrated high levels of educational motivation. A great number of students demonstrated middle and low levels and scored high on the motivation scale. So, the interrelationships between psychological health, psychological well-being and educational motivation are complex and bidirectional. Psychological well-being can positively or negatively influence educational motivation and in its turn be influenced by general psychological health, depending on the variety of social and environmental factors. Thus, this study can provide insights for educational and mental health professionals to develop effective intervention and support systems.
