Abstract

The study addressed the lack of understanding surrounding psychological safety in coaching dynamics between principals and coaches, specifically its impact on leadership practices in K-12 schools. By focusing on coaching relationships to enhance leadership practices, the research contributed to the existing literature by examining the foundational role of psychological safety within the principal-coach dynamic. The investigation centered on three primary research questions: how principals perceived the role of psychological safety in their coaching experiences, how these perceptions influenced their leadership practices, and what strategies effective coaches employed to foster psychological safety. Utilizing a phenomenological approach and thematic analysis, data were collected from ten Black K-12 principals in the United States through semi-structured interviews. The analysis revealed two overarching themes—Trust and Relationship Building and Adaptability and Responsiveness. By cultivating these elements, coaches become pivotal partners in principals’ success and ultimately strengthen leadership practices.
