Global Learning Supports Global Readiness – Projects With Purpose
Abstract
By fostering project-based collaborations with local business and non-profit entities, Austin Community College global learning students use real operational practices to gain insight and inspiration for project development on global themes such as sustainability, applied Lean principles and a variety of global social conflict issues from immigration and homelessness to hunger and obesity. In this session, the presenter will introduce participants to the Global Learning institute in Continuing Education at Austin Community College District. Through visual and oral presentation, the presenter will acquaint attendees with this unique program area, its successes since its inception in 2013 in promoting global readiness through projects with purpose and special attention given to balancing learning, hospitality and travel. This session highlights (3) 2-week global learning project-based programs constructed and coordinated for two Danish gymnasia located in the municipalities of Thisted and Herning in the Northern region of Denmark; Northwestern Jutland. Some notable corporate and non-profit partnerships include but are not limited to Mobile Loaves and Fishes’ Community First! Village, Meal on Wheels Central Texas, Kompan, Inc, Goodwill Industries of Central Texas, 10,000 Villages and the Austin Baptist Chapel – Angel House Soup Kitchen. Past projects have used media like video game development for example to educate the student developer and the end user on global social conflict issues as well as the development of mock Non-Governmental Organizations to promote empathy though awareness while exercising critical solution-based thinking.
