Abstract

Educational escape rooms transfer the thrill and engagement of their recreational counterparts into a pedagogical framework. This way, educational escape rooms offer an alternative tool to assess learners in basically any field and at any level, as the puzzles composing an escape room could be customized to fill in the educational objectives. In this paper, we expose the design of a model of educational escape room in order assess the knowledge and skills acquired from learners in a college course related to introduction to computer science. Basically, the structure of this escape room was composed of a bunch of levels, where each of those was formed by a sequential path of puzzles, such that each level had to be cleared before moving to the next one. This layout was tested to assess our 25 students, leading them to improve their academic performance and success rate compared to the previous year.
