Abstract

The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the impact of the LivescribeTM Symphony smartpen assistive technology and the Cornell note-taking strategy on the lecture comprehension and quality of written notes of college student-athletes with learning disabilities. Participants were 5 undergraduate student-athletes who used the LivescribeTM pen and Cornell notetaking during health lectures. Data sources included student interviews, notes, rubrics, recall exercises, surveys, and pre/post-tests. Findings showed the LivescribeTM pen coupled with Cornell notes increased lecture engagement, optimized note organization, improved critical content capture, assisted with information review, and enhanced recallabilities. Students conveyed assistive technology andstructured note-taking techniques aided comprehension while lessening anxiety. They desired broader implementation in fast-paced college courses to become more self-sufficient learners. Overall, the LivescribeTM pen and Cornell notes demonstrated effectiveness in overcoming note-taking barriers and boosting achievement motivation among university students with disabilities.
