Abstract

In the contemporary landscape of complex computer networks, safeguarding against sophisticated threats and ensuring seamless functionality demands robust security measures. This has propelled the prominence of micro-segmentation, delineating networks into isolated sections to curtail lateral threats and reduce the attack surface. Within the realm of Active Directory (AD) environments, where data protection is paramount, conventional security measures often falter against evolving threats. Micro-segmentation emerges as a promising strategy, enabling granular control over network traffic and enforcing a zero-trust model. This study delineates the foundation, importance, and challenges associated with micro-segmentation in AD environments. It accentuates how micro-segmentation counters lateral movements, mitigates risks and amplifies security by dividing networks into isolated segments. Recognizing the significance of this strategy, the research sets out to evaluate its impact, efficacy, challenges, and opportunities for refinement in AD environments.
