Abstract

Integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) has gained significant attention in the rapidly evolving landscape of global education. It is perceived as a transformative approach to fostering holistic learning experiences and outcomes. STEAM education transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries, encouraging students to explore real-world challenges through collaborative problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity. By intertwining practical application with theoretical knowledge, students develop a comprehensive understanding of complex issues and acquire essential skills for the future workforce. John Dewey’s educational philosophy harmonizes seamlessly with STEAM education, emphasizing experiential learning, reflection, and the connection between education and life. His emphasis on learning by doing and situating education within authentic contexts resonates deeply with the principles of STEAM, where students engage in hands-on projects mirroring real-world scenarios. Dewey’s philosophical perspective of education strives towards an integrated curriculum, experiential learning, individualized instruction, student-centered methods, and lifelong learning (Hargraves, 2021). As educators, administrators, and policymakers seek innovative pedagogies approaches that prepare students for an evolving world, understanding STEAM with Dewey’s philosophy becomes necessary. Thus, connecting the dots between Dewey’s philosophy and STEAM education provides insights into the importance of STEAM education for a holistic and practical learning environment for fostering creative and adaptable thinkers for the challenges of the 21st century. Using Nicholson (2016) critical questions for understanding the philosophy of education in an expository discourse, this paper highlights the intricate interplay between STEAM education and John Dewey’s educational philosophy, underscoring how their convergence can enrich the development of contemporary education.
