Abstract

Globally, higher education is going through a disruptive change. A climate has emerged where multiple stakeholders believe academia is losing credibility. Politicians question the value of higher education, faculty, and administrators. Tenure is threatened, and universities increasingly rely on temporary and adjunct faculty. Given this environment, we call for a paradigm shift towards interdisciplinary education. Those working within higher education frequently find themselves confined by disciplinary allegiances and communication silos that constrain their ability to innovate and evolve their research. Evolving toward interdisciplinary education has positive consequences, including the development of holistic decision-making and contribution to solving complex societal problems.
